What is a Serial Cable?

Transferring information is one of the most important tasks which occupy a human being’s life these days and is done with the help of serial cable. With the growth of technology, new programs and hardware are found which have different compatibility features. In order to provide this new hardware with the other formats, different cables are used.

One of these cables is the serial cable which is generally used for a typical type of communication, which is the RS-232. These serial cables vary with length and the number of pins available. There are many characteristics affecting the length and the durability of the cable.

The capacitance and the resistance play an important role in determining the length of the serial cable. The bit rate also plays a vital part for the same. The number of connectors used for the construction of the serial cable also varies with different things. With research, we have found that as many as three to twenty five conductors can be used to make a serial cable.

There are many suppliers and producers of the serial cables. Every supplier also manufactures different connectors for the serial cable to be plugged in the PC. In case of any problems, a “breakout box” is used to determine and resolve the problem arising in the cable. The ultimate box generally has two ports namely the male gender and the female gender. These are connector ports and used to connect in-line. Serial cables are kept and manufactured unshielded for a strange reason.
